Jo Magney

A nanny, her father’s Irish Setter gun dog that went by the name Lady, raised Jo Magney.

Jo was fortunate as a child, and had an empathetic mother that helped her get a start in showing dogs by acquiring a Basset Hound, aptly named Gomer, that Jo showed in breed conformation competition during her teenage years. Later, Jo’s sister married into an English Springer Spaniel family, which introduced Jo to the breed that she owns and loves today.

She has spent many years training and showing her Springers in breed conformation, obedience and has tried her hand at agility. Once her dogs are finished with competition, Jo keeps them active as therapy dog volunteers visiting senior citizens.

Jo has a gentle teaching style and has three basic goals for her canine students.

  • Learn manners and basic obedience skills
  • Learn how to be a wonderful companion for their human family
  • Learn how to avoid bad behaviors so the dog doesn’t end up as a statistic at a humane society

Jo recently had some excitement in her life when she won a five-percent share in Jeannine's Vow, an unraced 2-year-old, with all fees paid for a two-year period. The promising filly hails from the racing stable of the successful West Point Thoroughbreds. We hope Jo’s students will get an opportunity to see their instructor in the winner’s circle in addition to seeing her in the training center.
